Figure 7-13 from Molecular Biology of the cell. 4th edition, depicts the DNA-binding helix-turn-helix motif. The motif is shown on the left with each white circle denoting the central carbon of an amino acid. The C-terminal alpha helix in red is called the recognition helix as it participates in sequence-specific recognition of DNA. The left side of the model shows the helix fitting within the major groove of DNA, where it contacts the edges of the base pairs. The N-terminal alpha helix is shown in blue functioning mainly as a structural component that helps to position the recognition helix.
