Siyavula, created and founded by Mark Horner, is South Africa's K-12 Open Textbook Initiative to provide K-12 schools and students with low-cost, very affordable K-12 open textbooks and OER resources that can be easily downloaded and copied for a hard copy or downloaded to mobile devices, making open textbooks widely available in South Africa. Siyavula provides an outstanding model in how open textbooks can be written and published by a volunteer community of educators within a very short time period. For example, they recently meet as a volunteer group to digitally write and publish a Physical Science open textbook within 48 hours.
