The prowess of Achilles, Diomedes, and Hektor are one of the central themes of The Iliad by Homer. There are other, minor, characters whose contributions to the plot help us understand the complexities of the human condition during times of war. From the violation of themis (what’s “right) to the graphic use of gore, the examination of minor characters aids our understanding of this epic poem.   Using the medium of poetry, we will use AI (ChatGPT, Bard, etc.) to generate a poem about a minor character of your choosing. We will compare the result to what we already have experienced reading the Homeric Greek. After translating the result of our AI search into Homeric Greek we will examine the vocabulary, rhetorical devices, and motifs. Finally, in a well-crafted essay using examples of social annotation you will determine if AI contributes to our understanding of this epic poem or detracts from it.  

Experience – Participants will have read significant amounts of Homeric Greek, namely, The Iliad by Homer.
