The Library of Congress (LC), established in 1800 by the United States Congress, is the largest library in the world with over 170 million items in their collection. In the mid 1990s, LC began digitizing items and developing digital collections. LC now has over 21 petabytes (21,000,000 gigabytes) of digital content organized into 505 collections.

How can researchers navigate and use LC’s Digital Collections for their own purposes? This 10-minute workshop will address this question and demystify LC’s vast digital resources.

At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to: 

• Succinctly describe and analyze the scope and structure of the LC’s Digital Collections
• Successfully search and retrieve a resource from a digital collection within this organizing system
• Accurately identify best practices for downloading and citing digital content from the Library of Congress

This workshop includes a lesson plan and slide deck. The slide deck contains links to example digital collections, a guided search activity, and presenter notes.
