The Library of Congress (LOC) has an extensive collection of the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps and many of them are accessible online, with more to come. This lesson plan is designed to share the original purpose of Sanborn Maps and review the organizing system found on the LOC webpage. Then, an opportunity is provided to explore the site during the lesson in order to provide a hands-on experience to locate maps of interest such as your hometown. The lesson concludes with some examples of how the Sanborn maps may be used at present.
