The lesson plan and accompanying slide show provide an overview of the organization and collection at the Library of Congress for their Sanborn Map collection.  This collection of over 25000 maps covering over 3000 US cities and towns is the largest of its kind in the world and provides a resource into the changing face of the United States from the company's inception in 1867 to their last map updates in the 1970s.  Used in hobbies, genealogy, history, environmental research, the Sanborn map collection is an important resource.  

During the 10 minutes class students will accomplish the following learning objectives:

• Students will accurately identify the original purpose of the Sanborn Maps collection.
• Students will accurately identify additional uses for the Sanborn Maps collection.
• Students will experiment with the different filtering options available in the system.
• Students will successfully navigate the system to retrieve a unique map.

This lesson will give students the ability to use and navigate the collection and provides an overview of the history of the Sanborn maps and some suggested uses, as well as the ability to navigate the collection.
