PictureHistory: The Primary Source for History Online
This website has thousands of historical photographs and paintings on countless topics. You can search by keywords. Topics include "Historic Eras and Events," "Arts and Entertainment," "People and Professionals," Places and Vistas," "Social Conditions, Culture and Cultural Trends," and "War and Military," and more. For example, this URL (http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/do_history/young_people/ index.cfm ) takes you to "Children and Babies." Teachers and students can see pictures of an African American family on their front porch in rural North Carolina in 1914, a barefoot girl working in a cotton mill in 1908, and a picture of a classroom full of students in a Manhattan school in 1890. Other pictures show Andrew Carnegie with his grandchildren and Ethel Barrymore with her children. Teachers can illustrate the differences in socio-economic status by pointing out the differences in clothing and homes. On the "Teenagers" page, the picture of Jesse James at age 16 is next to John F. Kennedy's high school graduation picture.
