Cell Collective is a free computational modeling and simulation technology that was built in the Helikar research lab at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. It is dual purpose for both biomedical research and life sciences education. To date, we have developed and deployed over 15 modeling and simulation lessons to teach various biological processes (e.g., cell respiration, gene regulation, photosynthesis, and others). The lessons have been deployed and adopted in over 70 education institutions worldwide, impacting over 12,000 students. Notably, institutions using Cell Collective in education are not only diverse based on institution type and location but also present strong student diversity. We have published a body of literature illustrating the learning efficacy of our technology, most recently demonstrated that this learning approach has the potential to decrease the achievement gap (Booth et al., 2020).
