The purpose of this OER is to introduce students to the idea of flaws and weaknesses in arguments within a critical thinking context. Assuming only a very basic grasp of critical thinking (and including a link to a simple introduction to critical thinking for those unfamiliar) the material begins by asking and explaining what is meant by a flaw or weakness in an argument. The main part of the material then attempts to provide students with a framework for understanding and analysing weaknesses by presenting three sets of three flawed arguments for them to work with, with questions asked and feedback offered for each argument. The material concludes by looking at a real-world example of poor reasoning from a newspaper article. This resource may be useful for undergraduate students in their first year of academic study, and anyone looking to improve their reasoning skills.
