Sickel cell anemia is a form of anemia where the red blood cells form a sickle shape instead of their normal disk shape.  With an abnormal amount of hemoglobin, the red blood cells tend to block blood flow in the vessels.  The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute is a great website, providing information on sickle cell anemia and diagrams of how sickle cell anemia affects the red blood cells and blood flow in the body.
