Sickle Cell Anemia and Physiology: A Case-Based Biology Lesson Plan
This case is designed around the following learning objectives: students will be able to diagnose sickle cell anemia based on certain symptoms; understand the primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structure of proteins in general; understand the normal structure and function of the hemoglobin molecule; understand the molecular basis of the symptoms of sickle cell anemia; relate the structure of hemoglobin to its function and its ultimate effect on the human disorder; apply this concept by investigating an unfamiliar disorder and determining the molecular connection.
