The development of pilot aeronautical decision-making (ADM) skills has been recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration to be the most critical component of pilot training. In an attempt to improve the capabilities of pilots in ADM, the aviation industry has moved from its traditional maneuvers based training to a scenario-based approach. In an attempt to bring scenario-based training into the classroom for student pilots, I developed six scenarios that can be “flown” in the classroom, using the off the shelf software, Microsoft Flight Simulator X. While Flight Simulator was for many years regarded as simply a game, the package has now evolved to the point of being useful for pilot training. Research has shown that benefits in both initial skills and recurrent training can be experienced by using the software package. This level of fidelity allows students in a Private Pilot ground school course to experience scenarios in the classroom, and employ ADM skills. The view from the cockpit, including both the aircraft instrument panel and outside the windscreen as seen below, is projected onto the classroom screen, and the simulated aircraft is flown through the scenarios in real time by either myself or a student volunteer.
