This Flash-based presentation focuses on the first step of any research endeavor, namely, choosing a topic. Suggestions for accomplishing this task include determining the proper focus (or breadth) of the topic, extracting key concepts and subject terms in preparation for research, and developing a thesis statement. There are three short optional quizzes (or activities) within the section. Each quiz consists of three multiple choice questions, and every answer choice has a corresponding explanation. Like the three practice activities, the site contains several research examples and tips that display in popup windows when clicked.
