Thoughts on the Next Challenge Regarding Calculus Goals
This paper takes the view that goals, content, and pedagogy are inseparable. We see that the role calculus took on as a "filter" was not only due to inadequate classroom materials (mostly unmotivated and pedantic) but also to student problems with mastery of prerequisite skills, lack of quality study time, and lack of appreciation for the importance of calculus in their downstream courses. Despite vigorous reform efforts, these problems are still with us. In this paper we suggest some ways of attacking these outstanding fundamental problems and then consider how the content and pedagogy will finally be able to successfully evolve in response. If we remain unable to address these fundamental problems, "calculus as filter rather than pump" may still be true in the next decade as well. Target Audience: 2-4 Year College Faculty/Administrators
