Lesson plan for a six-lesson unit on teaching ESL how to debate – structure and strategies, vocabulary. CEFR Domain: Public. CEFR Activity: Production / Speaking - Sustained monologue putting a case (e.g., in a debate).

Can-Do Statements: Can develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting his/her points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples. Can give a clear, prepared academic presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Educational value of this material: Engaging in debates supports development of speaking, critical thinking, learning the etiquette of debate—waiting your turn to speak, waiting to be recognized, listening to the other side and taking notes, and politely disagreeing.

Debating develops ability to express and defend ideas in debate, and recognize the flaws in each other's arguments.
