Policy Informatics for Complex Systems

This video was recorded at International Workshop on Coping with Crises in Complex Socio-Economic Systems. Mental models are inadequate for coping with crises in complex socioeconomic systems. Modern information technology can support evidencebased policies using simulations to synthesize data. Synthetic data provide a natural representation of situations and hypothetical outcomes, suitable for use by policy-makers. This talk will explore issues arising in the emerging science of policy informatics: distinctions between support for planning or response efforts; determining requirements for resolution, fidelity, precision, and accuracy in synthetic data; communicating between model developers and stakeholders which includes designing informative experiments and interpreting outcomes; and assessing adequacy of models. Examples will be drawn from practical experiences with the novel H1N1 influenza.
