How to Read a Topographic Map

This is the fourth lesson of four about what maps show us. This web site covers Investigation and Interpretations Standard h of the California Content Standards. Included in the teaching packet are a set of maps of Salt Lake City, Utah, an activity sheet, key points of the lesson, suggestions for teaching the lesson and additional follow up activities. When teaching a lesson about topographic maps it will be necessary to discuss what a topographic map is and what is shows. It will be necessary to go more in depth than what the lesson on the site discusses. The activity sheet starts by showing a simple contour map and how to read it. The activity then shows how a simple map of an area can be represented with a contour map to provide more information. The activity concludes with students examining a real topographic map of Salt Lake City and answering questions about this map.
