Internet Learning of Steel Applications and Processes
steeluniversity.org is an on-line initiative by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) and is aimed at providing a comprehensive package of highly interactive e-learning resources on steel technologies, covering all aspects of the steelmaking processes through to products, their applications and recycling. The pilot project comprised two distinct, though related modules. The first is based on a typical steel application ? the car door outer panel. In this role-play simulation, the user is challenged to reduce the component mass by 25% without sacrificing performance. The second module puts the user in charge of a virtual secondary steelmaking plant in order to produce one of four steel grades used in very different applications (including car door outer panels). The underlying science is presented in supporting web pages and a PDF user guide. The two modules were completed in 2002 and extensively evaluated around the world, both in academia and within the steel industry. The evaluation of these pilot modules included an assessment of the support for the development of further modules. The response was overwhelmingly positive and has led to the IISI commissioning 20 further modules over the next four years. The pilot project comprised two distinct, though related modules.
