Background

Nurses practice in High Expectations and Risk Occupations (HEROs). Expectations and risk can lead to stress, potential burnout, and devastating consequences to nurses, the nursing profession, and person/patient safety. Therefore, self-care for nurses is paramount to protecting nurses, the profession, and person/patient well-being.

Purpose

The researchers performed this concept analysis to inform a concise definition of self-care for nurses.

Methods

The researchers employed Walker and Avant’s concept analysis methodology, along with an extensive literature review.

Findings

The researchers formulated a definition of self-care for nurses that is uniquely attributed to nursing, based on concept analysis.

Discussion

Self-care is an important concept and essential practice for nurses. Socialization regarding the how-to and necessity of an ongoing self-care journey is crucial for both nursing students and nurses.
