This multimedia-rich OER module offers an engaging introduction to opera for general education and beginning music students. It explores the history, cultural impact, and expressive power of opera through high-quality TED-Ed video case studies of three iconic arias: the Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute, the Toreador Song from Carmen, and the romantic duet Chiedi all’aura lusinghiera from L’elisir d’amore.
Students will learn about voice types, character portrayal, and the unique artistry of singing without microphones. The module also connects opera to modern pop culture, including a featured example from the sci-fi film The Fifth Element, and includes original illustrations to support visual learning.
A 20-question multiple-choice quiz is included to reinforce learning outcomes. This flexible resource is suitable for in-class or online use in music appreciation, humanities, or cultural studies courses.
