Every year, millions of metric tons of plastic enter Earth’s oceans. Plastic’s low cost, lightweight nature, strength, durability, and versatility have fundamentally changed consumer habits. However, these qualities have made plastic pollution one of our most significant environmental challenges. This project-based learning unit challenges students to explore the issue of plastic pollution through the eyes of marine organisms and examine how human actions impact fragile ecosystems. Students will analyze whether initiatives like plastic bag bans go far enough to mitigate the problem and innovate campaigns to inspire behavioral change in their communities. Along the way, they will engage in interdisciplinary activities that foster scientific literacy, critical thinking, and collaboration while applying writing, math, and social science skills. The project culminates in students applying their new perspectives to create a campaign for change, empowering them to act and inspiring others to address the global threat of plastic pollution.
