**This special version of the OER has been customized to meet the unique needs of scholars studying in limited correctional environments.** The OER is influenced by a 3,000-year-old tradition of rhetoric. Rhetoric can expose how people perceive reality. Public speech and communication are essential tools in shaping our understanding of reality. Consider politics, philosophy, religion, technology, advertising, and scientific reasoning: public communication is the primary method through which ideas in these areas are disseminated. Upon closer examination of public communication, you'll realize its profound impact on your daily life.
