This is a 10-12 week unit/semester plan that was created through the auspices of a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad through SUNY Purchase College in 2023-2024. 

The unit explores oral and written traditions in Benin, West Africa, particularly among the Fon people, and connects and compares to traditions in the United States. The unit explores themes about literacy, communication, maintaining traditions through language use, and the responsibilities of communities and individuals to maintain cultural traditions. The unit asks students to analyze their relationships with language and literacy, while also grappling with gender, race, slavery, and cultural comparisons.
