Course Description: Introduction to the causes of substance use and abuse in U.S. society, the enforcement of drug and alcohol abuse and contemporary modalities of prevention and treatment of substance abuse. Theories of substance abuse will be reviewed and the effectiveness of current enforcement practices will also be discussed. Learning Objectives: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. Describe how politics, economics, and history affect U.S. drug use and drug laws. 2. Articulate and analyze the basic theories of drug use and how they apply to real world situations. 3. Describe and analyze the problem of illicit drug use in U.S. society.
