The NIH Grants and Funding policy explains why animals are used in research and the policy and principles researchers need to follow while using animal models. It is to note that NIH does not fund cosmetic research. They claim that animals have important roles in biomedical and behavioral research to enhance human lives. They also speak to the good care needed for the animals as it goes hand in hand with good science. Animal models allow researchers to study certain biological processes and reactions by utilizing the similarities between humans and certain animals. These tests on animal models allow researchers to mediate some risk away from humans when clinical trials are done on humans(translational research). Preclinical research may include animals and provide fundamental understanding to physiological systems and what to expect. To receive a NIH grant, a researcher must describe in their NIH grant application, 7 points as listed on their website of why their research is important and information regarding the usage and irreplaceable animal model they need. They must also follow the 3Rs: Replace, refine, and Reduce when designing their studies with animals.
