This translated book describes how, through more than 30 years of social mobilization and challenging relations with the state, the Indigenous Regional Council of Cauca (Consejo Indígena Regional del Cauca - CRIC) shaped its Bilingual and Intercultural Education Program (PEBI in Spanish). It describes the exceptional experience of an Indigenous organization who took control of the system of education in the middle of ongoing internal armed conflict and state repression. We provide the social, political, and cultural context to understand why this innovative education program became a central point of reference for the advancement of Indigenous interests regarding the recuperation of ancestral lands, language, and culture in Colombia.  

Because this Indigenous education system was the result of a sustained collective effort facing life threatening challenges, the book was written to provide new generations of teachers and parents with the historical account of the battles and goals accomplished. It provides the context for understanding the pillars that frame the educational program - the significance of Indigenous worldviews, the relationship between Indigenous worldviews and culture, the process of Indigenous resistance, the conceptual relevance of interculturalism rather than multiculturalism, and the communitarian education approach.
