Black Studies programs across the nation have been in a fight for their survival for years. As colleges and universities choose the proverbial “ax over the scalpel” to cut budgets in the wake of decreased state and federal funding, Black Studies and other area study programs are often the first on the chopping block. Lack of interest and low enrollment are commonly cited as justifications for slashing or underfunding Black Studies programs, many of which are still in their infancy relative to other academic fields. #BlackLivesMatter is (re)igniting a resurgence of public displays of resilience and resistance, especially among Millennial college students
