Asking students to self-assess their engagement, participation, and attendance in a class helps them demonstrate ownership of their learning: They set goals at the start of the term, and share what they hope to learn, what grade they aim to earn, and obstacles they feel might impede their progress toward those goals. At midterm, and again at semester's end, they assess their engagement and participation, by sharing ways they have engaged with the class both during and between class sessions, tracking their attendance record on the course website, and sharing ways they have applied concepts from the class to their personal and community lives.
