CHEM 1212 is a 3-credit hour class that has undergone a complete curriculum and pedagogical redesign which included adding a fourth hour of class as a weekly one-hour instructor-led mandatory recitation session. In light of the pandemic and the need to move classes online the recitation sessions became an invaluable tool to assist students in learning the content. The general chemistry team pivoted and began creating recitation worksheets rather than lab materials to be used initially in Zoom meetings and then face to face. In these recitation sessions, students work in groups and the instructors and Peer Learning Assistants help students to gain a deeper understanding of the process of problem solving as it relates to the CHEM 1212 content. During the CHEM 1212 recitation sessions students utilize resources such as worksheets and case studies. The purpose of this ALG proposal was to develop these ancillary materials to better meet the needs of the students and assist in deeper learning and understanding of the content and the interrelation of chemistry to other disciplines. The addition of recitation sessions coupled with the other pedagogical changes that have been made to the class have resulted in an increase in successful grades while neither the content nor the rigor of the course have been diminished. The historical grades for the CHEM 1212 lecture course are shown below.
