In this video plane stress is taken as an assumption used in solid mechanics to simplify the analysis of a component by turning a 3D problem into a 2D one. For a plane stress condition to be applicable, all of the non-zero stress components should be acting in the same plane. Plane stress is particularly relevant for thin components which are loaded in a single plane. In the video three examples of plane stress are addressed - a thin perforated plate, thin-walled pressure vessels, and thin gears.
