n this live interview + Q&A session with Campus Technology, Every Learner Everywhere Director, Dr. Jessica Rowland Williams, discusses a myriad of topics related to equitable, high-quality online learning. A common thread throughout the discussion is a charge for faculty and higher education institution leaders to imagine a future where technology is used to build learning environments that provide equal and fair learning opportunities for every student. Williams discusses the preparation and dedication required to develop a truly effective online learning experiences, and describes many of the challenges students may face when the process is rushed, as it was during the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges include technology access and use, the requirement of a new skill set for learning online, and access to private study spaces. Institutions should plan to support students in creative ways, modeled from the leadership of other institutions already doing it well, such as providing mentors to students and listening to the challenges students face rather than assuming what they may need. Equity-centered design of the learning environment needs to be made a priority at every institution, says Williams. To get started, she recommends examining course content and activities to ensure they demonstrate that diversity is valued in the course and setting a tone of inclusivity on the first day of a course by enabling students to connect and learn about each other. The session closes with an overview of some of the key resources that Every Learner has recently made available to the field as well as recommendations for ways to stay in touch with the Every Learner network.
