This resource is a group lesson plan that outlines the live walk-through via screen sharing – approximately 12-13 minutes – and brief summary of the streaming platform service of Amazon Prime Video (APV) as viewed as an organizing system. Learning objectives for this lesson are to 1.) be able to operate the common and unique technical functions of the platform in order to discover resources and to 2.) compare functions of APV with other streaming services and understand its benefits and limitations.
The resource provides a general outline for a live walk-through which starts with an overview of the platform and its organizational structure and search features, then proceeds to highlight its similarities and differences with other platforms. Finally, special features and resource discovery is discussed. Information science concepts are discussed throughout which include APV’s search functions, organizational schemas, access points, ADA accommodations, platform interoperability and crosswalks, resource interaction, metadata elements, and folksonomies. A link to a supplemental article from Business Insider, which offers a detailed comparison of streaming services, is also provided. Ideas for audience/presenter interactions are proposed – examples include utilization of polls, allowing the audience to participate in certain walk-through choices, a scavenger-hunt for specific metadata elements, etc. Ideally, each group member would address a particular aspect of the organizing system/APV (Overview & Structure/Organization and Comparisons/Special Features and Discovery), but this lesson could be adapted to be taught by a larger or smaller group, if needed.
