First-Year Writing students write towards achieving a grade rather than improving their ability to communicate their ideas in writing. The diverse student population of CSUN is represented in my composition classes and that includes many second language learners and/or first-generation college students who have had frustrating experiences in high school English classes that have led them to believe that receiving a passing grade is enough and the most they can expect from themselves.
