Instructors who are new to open educational resources (OER) and practices can be reluctant to commit to adopting OER materials due to anticipated or unknown challenges.  In redesigning their courses to use OER, there may be missing materials that they have to find or develop themselves.  They may be concerned about how students will react to an open textbook format or how well students will achieve the course learning outcomes with the new materials.

Hear from an Art History instructor and a History instructor from different colleges in different states who have recently completed their first OER adoptions.  Starting with what motivated them to adopt OER in their courses, they will share with us what they learned in the process using the following as guiding questions:

• What challenges did you face in adopting OER? How did you address the challenges? 
• What was your process for getting the work done? What did your college do for you to make it easier? What do you wish your college could have done for you? 
• How did your teaching change?
• How are your students reacting in your OER course?  How are you measuring that?
• What do you think you might change in the future? 
• How can your college help OER to be successful across your discipline?
