The research on this project shows the importance of getting students engaged in math on the first day of class. My findings indicate that students want to relate math to real-life activities, jobs, and ideas. I've designed a first day of class lesson plan to get the students thinking about how math is currently present in their life, and how math will be present in their future. The assignments associated with lesson plan are meant to encourage deep critical thinking on the subject. The students will be asked to share with their peers in order to get to know each other. I'm hoping the students will recognize and appreciate the rich diversity in our classroom community and how different people use math in different ways. The Microsoft PowerPoint presentation will provide the snappy launch into my lesson plan, and provide visual cues for the students (and myself) to stay on task.
