This applet facilitates investigation of confidence intervals. The display shows a large jar of balls, some blue and some orange. At the user’s instigation, a sample of balls is taken from the jar. In a plot below, the applet draws a bar representing a confidence interval for the percentage of orange balls in the jar as computed from the sample. The user can select the confidence level and sample size and can use the applet to plot side-by-side confidence intervals from up to 100 samples. The applet can be used to examine how the length of a confidence interval relates to the sample size and confidence level, and to illustrate sampling variation. The user can choose to display on the plot the true percentage of orange balls, and can thus observe how the confidence level relates to the percentage of intervals that cover the parameter value.
