Video shows a PICC line insertion for a patient who possibly will have long term antibiotic therapy.  This procedure is completed by a RN who is specially trained in the procedure.  This is a sterile procedure.  PICC lines can stay in place for at least one year.  PICC lines are mostly used for long term antibiotic therapys and certain chemotherapy.  PICC lines keep patients from having to have peripherial IV's started for the therapy.  Most people can continue with there daily activities with the PICC ine in place.  However, most patients have limitations and will have to alter there lifestyles to some degree.  PICC lines can become infected and may have to be removed and restarted in the other extremity.  PICC lines may also be placed by a Interventional Radiologist.
