A Simultaneous View of History in 16th Century New Spain or Relaciones Geograficas de America
The Spanish government established a commission in the 16th century to develop a questionnaire to describe a variety of regions in New Spain. The questionnaire consisted of 50 questions. Juan Lopez de Velasco, royal astronomer, was believed to be the creator of the questionnaire. This site provides the questions and answers for six locations in New Spain: Puerto Rico(1582) (in English), Xonotla, Mexico (1581)(in English) and in only Spanish: Zimapan, Mexico (1579); Huaxutla, Mexico ((1582); Caracus, Venezuela (1579); and El Tocugo, Venezuela (1581). Maps, Images, and Video provide further resources for this excellent primary source on what the Spanish saw when they began the conquest and settlement of the Americas.
