Case It! molecular biology computer simulations
Case It! is an NSF-funded BioQUEST project to provide molecular biology simulations for case-based learning in biology, free of charge for educational use. Case It v5.03 will perform DNA/protein electrophoresis, PCR, Southern, Western and dot blotting, and ELISA on any DNA or protein sequence (up to 5 million base pairs or amino acids). Associated cases have been developed for a variety of genetic and infectious diseases, including breast cancer, Alzheimer disease, AIDS, influenza, West Nile, Salmonella, and sexually-transmitted infections, among others. Software, cases, tutorials, and publications are available at the Case It web site, including video cases for AIDS in the U.S. and Africa (courtesy of Discovery Education and Media for Development International). The site also provides to a custom web editor/conferencing system so that students can collaborate with their peers via online "poster sessions". During 2006-7 the software has been or will be used at 63 universities, community colleges and high schools in 27 states, 2 Canadian provinces, and 10 countries outside the U.S. and Canada. This is a replacement for v4.01, already in the MERLOT collection.
