Students will practice and improve skills in listening and speaking in a variety of contexts. The theme of our class will be food.
Learning about the English vowel system, word stress, intonation, and reductions will help students in both speaking and listening. We are going to listen to recorded information from CDs and the internet to understand more of what we hear and to learn new information about food-related topics. We will also focus on how to organize and present information so the message comes across clearly.
A variety of in-class activities will give students many opportunities for speaking and listening. We will prepare food, discuss eating habits, do a little gardening, tour the campus food pantry and visit a local restaurant. During the term, students will be required to spend two hours outside of class volunteering with a food-related organization. Graded speaking assignments will include imitation of a native speaker, an individual presentation in class, and a report about a volunteer experience. Regular homework will include surveys with native speakers and online listening exercises. Frequent listening quizzes will be based on in-class activities and homework.
