Overall, the OER book level is a bit low for the level of ESL Listening/Speaking class I was looking for, but we have multiple level, so I will recommend it for the level below what I am currently teaching. Thought the topics are less academic than textbooks I have used in the past, for example, instead of focusing on academic content areas, they are more general lifestyle topics. This could still work for supplementary or introductory units. I found the structure and overall organization are well done. The opening activities of each chapter are discussion-based regarding images that relate to the content of the unit. The vocabulary activities are relevant and helpful, and the sections on syllable, word stress, reductions, and other pronunciation skills are well-done. The listening activities and accompanying questions and discussions and also fine. I appreciate that for each chapter there are suggested links (mostly to the ELLLO website) and homework and speaking skills assignments provided. Things that I felt are missing as compared to what I currently use are videos, rubrics for assessment, and quizzes or tests for each chapter. Overall. I think this could be used in part or as whole to supplement other more academic work including note-taking and lectures.
