This text is being used as a supplementary resource in a Marketing Research course. It was reviewed using the BC Campus rubric. Overall rating is 4.5/5 stars. Text under review: Introductory Business Statistics. Holmes, A., Illowsky, B., & Dean, S. (2017). Open Stax. [PDF version ISBN 13: 978-1-947172-47-0] Available online at Comprehensiveness Criteria: The text covers all areas and ideas of the subject appropriately and provides an effective index and/or glossary. Text: Subject appropriate areas as outlined in the Table of Contents include sampling, descriptive statistics, probability, distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and regressions. Additional statistical tables and glossary are included as appendices. Content Accuracy Criteria: Content is accurate, error-free and unbiased. Text: At a glance content included appears to be accurate, error-free, and unbiased. However, a comprehensive review of chapter examples would be beneficial prior to the text’s use. Chapter 6 “The Normal Distribution” was chosen to be examined more closely and would be considered accurate by the reviewer. Relevance Longevity Criteria: Content is up-to-date, but not in a way that will quickly make the text obsolete within a short period of time. The text is written and/or arranged in such a way that necessary updates will be relatively easy and straightforward to implement. Text: This is a mathematical textbook with commonly accepted theories expected to remain relevant in the field for the long term. Updates to content or examples could come with revisions of the underlying text, but material will not become obsolete in a short period of time. Clarity Criteria: The text is written in lucid, accessible prose, and provides adequate context for any jargon/technical terminology used. Text: This text is geared toward business statistics and includes examples in chapter introductions related specifically to the theory or formula’s use and relevance in business practice. Terminology is introduced with common terminology used and re-stated in chapter and formula review sections in each chapter. Problem examples are clearly shown with all steps and hand calculations included when applicable. Additionally, some software calculation examples are included with step by step instructions. Consistency Criteria: The text is internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework. Text: All chapters follow a consistent format. Introduction, subsections noted by chapter and section with clearly defined headers, key terms, a chapter review, a formula review, practice questions, homework questions, references, and chapter problem solutions. All charts and graphs are clearly identified and labeled. Modularity Criteria: The text is easily and readily divisible into smaller reading sections that can be assigned at different points within the course (i.e., enormous blocks of text without subheadings should be avoided). The text should not be overly self-referential, and should be easily reorganized and realigned with various subunits of a course without presenting much disruption to the reader. Text: The text has clearly defined sections/modules that could be assigned in conjunction with other materials or as a single module. Organization Structure Flow Criteria: The topics in the text are presented in a logical, clear fashion. Text: As outlined in the table of contents, subjects introduced are built upon in subsequent chapters or are expanded upon as necessary in a logical manner. Interface Criteria: The text is free of significant interface issues, including navigation problems, distortion of images/charts, and any other display features that may distract or confuse the reader. Text: The text is available to view as html at and available to download as a pdf. Neither appear to include navigation issues or distortion of content. Grammatical Errors Criteria: The text contains no grammatical errors. Text: The content appears to be well written with minimal grammatical errors. Cultural Relevance Criteria: The text is not culturally insensitive or offensive in any way. It should make use of examples that are inclusive of a variety of races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Text: Many of the statistical tests explained in the text are applicable to populations. In the examples, homework and practice problems, culturally sensitive objective descriptors are used. Some examples include referring to “a company” or describing individuals based on job rank like “manual laborers,” “mid-level managers,” and “executives”. The reviewer did not observe any culturally insensitive or offensive content based on the initial review.
