Continuing nurse education has become increasingly important for nurses and midwives working within the health setting. It is now seen as the cornerstone to the professional development of nurses and midwives. The Report of The Commission on Nursing (1998) endorsed the need for further education for nurses and midwives. The Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit has a role in promoting educational opportunities for nurses and midwives working within the Western Health Board region: it also has a responsibility to implement the recommendations of the Report of the Commission on Nursing.
