Material Detail
How Did it Get Here?
This field activity helps reinforce the idea that all surface features on the earth were formed by some type of process. To start the activity, the teacher will select a small area or feature and have students make observations in an attempt to visualize what these processes look like. Suitable spots include sloped fields, swamps, ledges, small streams or ponds, exposed gravel banks, levees, dunes, marshes, and so on. Students can inspect the area, make observations, and record them in order to explain the origin of the feature. Some examples are included, as well as a worksheet for recording observations and questions for discussion.
