The Moon, Earth's only natural satellite and one of the brightest objects in its sky, appears in the sky in many different shapes. Over the course of a month, the observed shapes result from the interaction of the Moon's orbit around the Earth and the sunlight reflected from it. This interactive resource explains the relationship between the Moon's orbit and its phases, and also explains how 'blue moons' (two full moons in a single calendar month) and eclipses occur.
