The purpose of this activity is to help students understand: (1) the nature of the electromagnetic spectrum, and more specifically, visible light; (2) to understand the role of light in the growth and maintenance of a healthy plant; (3) to understand the role of water in the growth and maintenance of a healthy plant; (4) to understand the process of photosynthesis by determining the presence of starch in a leaf; and (5) to understand the role of photosynthesis in providing the earth with oxygen.
