In this demonstration, liquids of different density are mixed to demonstrate how the layers of the Earth were formed as the denser materials sank to the inner portion of the Earth with the less dense materials, such as our crust, remaining on top. A large transparent cup, 3 small cups, cooking oil, corn syrup, water and food coloring are required materials. The resource is part of the teacher's guide accompanying the video, NASA SCI Files: The Case of the Shaky Quake. Lesson objectives supported by the video, additional resources, teaching tips and an answer sheet are included in the teacher's guide.
