This physical science activity was designed to engage students in thinking about the scientific principles involved in a teacher demonstration. In the demonstration, a balloon placed over the mouth of a flask of boiling water is pulled down into the flask. The activity addresses the push of air pressure and the volume changes that the water undergoes as it changes states. Questions are included for teachers to ask students at different stages of the demonstration. The activity also includes procedural and safety notes, a materials list, the science process skills used, and related National Science Education Standards. The science content of the activity is explained, and an assessment is suggested. This is one of the Whelmers activities, a set created to capture students' interest in science.
