The Real World Learning Objects Library has designed an activity that uses math to explain and design web pages, track usage, and chart real-world experiences as diverse as customers at a gas station, radioactive decay, and traffic flow to a help desk. In this project, students learn to use a Poisson process with real-time data in an attempt to connect math theory with real world results. The activity includes detailed instructions, assessment guides, project material, and access to software for understanding the numbers involved with such real life activities. Also included is a supplementary list of resources for more information. Ideal for teachers designing in-class projects or assignments, and for students with a desire to see how their mathematics could be used in the real world.
