PPI High School Connect is a web site intended for high-school biology classes, focusing on plant-microbe interactions and illustrating the importance of genomics in modern biology. It offers four modules exploring how plant pathogens infect host tissues and how plants defend themselves from pathogen attack. The modules can be completed singly or as a series. Each is illustrated with pictures and diagrams and has four "chapters": a brief lesson on the module topic and a lab experiment; a discussion of the impact the topic has on our lives; a discussion of how researchers use the scientific method to answer questions; and a web exercise using online free resources to familiarize students with bioinformatic tools and/or learn more about the module topic, and a quiz. PPI High School Connect also offers video interviews with researchers, activities printouts, annotated lists of further resources for students and teachers, and a glossary. The lab activities are developed to be feasible in a classroom and specific materials needed, such as seeds and bacterial strains, are sent to teachers on request. The site was developed through a collaboration between Drs. Alan Collmer, Magdalen Lindeberg, and Gregory Martin and the Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers.
